Title: Night Music
Words: 611
Rating: PG-13
Pairing/Characters: Pike/Number One
Summary: Should've left the blinds down.
Notes: for prompt "serenade"
Pike and One were lounging post dinner. They'd be having a drink but Pike's supposed to stay off it for awhile because of all the medical work and One's not going to drink in front of him. So their glasses have water instead, not quite as interesting.
They're staying in Pike's usual fleet apartment, a block or two off campus. He doesn't keep actual house in San Fran - too easy to get sucked into work during breaks (which he does too much of anyway) just the fleet owned apartment he's been in since he started teaching. It's sparse but has slowly accumulated more than a a bit of his possessions over the few years. Number One doesn't keep quarters on Earth at all, she has a storage unit. So he and One are stuck there until medical gives him the clear and he can line up doctors in Mojave.
He was restless, but One's presence was helping. Something positive to focus on, and her steady presence was as reassuring as it had always been he was glad to say. He owed her a lot, though she'd probably hit him for saying so.
It had all the makings of a quiet night, One was laid out on the couch, head in Pike's lap, going over some messages while Pike was decidedly ignoring his from spot. He had decided to concentrate on running his fingers through One's hair instead.
Their peace was broken too soon though. "I believe in a thing called love! Just listen to the rhythm of my heart!" came a screeching voice.
"What the hell..." he murmured, sitting up straighter.
One rose up as well and turned to him, raising an eyebrow, Pike waved a hand. "I've got it," he said.
"If you're sure," she replied and helped him back into his chair. The singing went on and Pike maneuvered over to the window.
And there, twenty feet below, was Jim Kirk, belting his lungs out and dancing on the sidewalk across the street.
"There's a chance we could make it now We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down, I believe in a thing called loooo-"
"Kirk!" Pike hollered, interrupting what he was pretty sure was an air guitar solo. No, yeah, that was definitely air guitar.
"Hi!" Kirk waved, stopping his antics for the moment.
"What the hell are you doing, son?"
"Singing!"
One came over to peer out beside Pike, also clearly disapproving of Kirk's antics. Under other circumstances they'd be intimidating, but this was Kirk. And a tipsy one at that so apparently they were entertaining instead.
"Hiiii to you too! " Kirk chirped at Number One.
She didn't dignify him with a verbal response.
"Kirk, I can still expel you," Pike barked. Actually he couldn't, but that wasn't the point.
"But you woooon't. 'cause you gots her," he points vaguely to One, "She makes you happy. I know," he wagged his finger at Pike, "I pay attention. You like her. " Kirk had that damn shit eating grin on his face and Pike realized he was probably playing drunker than he was for kicks. Damn kid.
Pike sighed and rubbed his temples. He wasn't quite sure how the fuck Kirk found out anything about Number One and he's not sure he wanted to know. What he did know was that he was decidedly not in the mood for this.
"Kirk, get the hell out of here or even she won't be able to cheer me up tonight," he shouted back before yanking the curtains shut. He heard a low chuckle from One, which takes the edge off.
Kirk wolf whistled. Pike pretended he didn't hear it.
